This is ‘The Best Of Straight Furrow’, an English Barndance and Ceilidh band who have a passion for English and Celtic folk tunes.
Throughout this album you can just tell that band members Susan Williams (vocals, keys, electric bass, melodeon, guitar), Brian Eade (vocal, guitar, banjo-mandolin, violin), and the late Jon Leff (flute, recorders, harmonica, mandolin, guitar), loved playing together. Every tune has something of themselves thrown in.
But what makes this album particularly memorable are the quirkier Shanty tunes that bring a smile – the ‘Three Hornpipes’, ”The Wherryboat’ and ‘Go To Sea No More’.
Sadly Jon Leff’s wonderful, emotive medieval recorder and penny whistle playing will be heard no more, with his untimely passing. But you will hear his memory in some of these jolly, and often beautifully ethereal renditions.
